Three suspects, two carrying firearms, broke into a garage in the 400 block of North Elmwood early Sunday, Oct. 4, and stole an estimated $15,000 in DeWalt power tools.

Surveillance video captured the three entering the garage at 4:44 a.m., according to the Oak Park Police Department's summary report covering Friday, Oct. 2, through Monday, Oct. 5. The suspects left in a white sedan. No arrests have been made.

The burglary was the most serious of roughly 16 incidents logged during the four-day window, which also included catalytic converter thefts, vehicle crimes and a retail theft.

Catalytic converter thefts

Someone used a cutting tool to remove two catalytic converters from a 2013 Isuzu truck parked in the 500 block of North Taylor on Friday, Oct. 2, between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The truck's owner lives in Garden Prairie, Illinois.

A second catalytic converter theft was reported in the 400 block of South Maple. The converter was taken from a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander sometime between Sept. 26 and Oct. 3. The estimated loss was $2,000.

Vehicle theft and recoveries

A black 2019 Honda Accord was stolen from the 0–100 block of South Boulevard at 1:12 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2. The owner tracked the car to the 4400 block of Maypole in Chicago, where the Chicago Police Department helped recover it. No one was arrested.

Two previously stolen vehicles were also recovered during the period. A 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, reported stolen Sept. 8 from the 0–100 block of Harrison, was found Oct. 2 by Chicago police after a crash at the 5000 block of West Roosevelt in Chicago. A 2024 Honda Accord stolen Sept. 30 from the 900 block of South Boulevard turned up Oct. 3 at the 3600 block of West Roosevelt in Chicago. No arrests were made in either case.

Vehicle break-in and plate thefts

Between 2:30 and 7 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, someone smashed the rear driver's-side window of a Dodge Charger in the 900 block of South Euclid, damaged the steering column and took a backpack containing a Chromebook. The front license plate was also removed.

Three separate license-plate thefts were reported: a rear plate taken from a Honda Accord in the 1000 block of North Austin between Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, a rear plate from a 2017 Honda CR-V in the 200 block of Iowa between Oct. 2 and Oct. 3, and a front plate from a 2013 Chevrolet van in the 400 block of Washington between Sept. 25 and Oct. 2.

Someone also removed the front and rear passenger-side wheel well moldings from a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas parked in the 1000 block of Lyman between Sept. 27 and Oct. 2. Estimated damage: $500.

Retail theft and trespass arrest

A man took items from the shelves of the Walgreens at 811 Madison St. and left without paying at 7:22 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2. The estimated loss was not listed.

Oak Park police arrested Julius Johnigan, 44, of Chicago on a charge of criminal trespass to property at Accolade Adult Day Care, 112 S. Humphrey. Johnigan is considered innocent until proven guilty. The report's date field for the incident contains an apparent typographical error; the arrest appears in the Oct. 2–5 summary.

Other thefts

Someone defeated a bicycle lock and stole a black Urbrica bicycle worth an estimated $1,000 from a rack in the 1100 block of Lake Street between 7:27 and 7:40 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. A package containing two pairs of pants and a T-shirt, valued at $68.36, was taken from a building mailroom in the 1100 block of Washington on the afternoon of Oct. 2. Two pieces of glass artwork worth a combined $400 were removed from a backyard in the 300 block of South Humphrey on Oct. 1.

No arrests have been announced in any of the major incidents.
