Oak Park Elementary School District 97's board voted Tuesday night to fire an administrative assistant and took the rare step of authorizing formal dismissal charges against a tenured teacher, triggering the educator's right to a hearing under Illinois law.
The two personnel actions headlined a busy Aug. 11 regular meeting at 260 Madison St., presided over by Board President Cheree Moore, that also included approval of a new natural gas and energy supply buying process for the district's 10 schools.
Tenured teacher faces formal charges
The board passed a resolution authorizing issuance of notice of charges and dismissal and hearing rights to a tenured teacher. Under Illinois School Code Section 24-12, such a resolution requires a majority vote of all board members and compels the district to provide the teacher written notice of specific charges, a bill of particulars and information about the right to request a formal hearing before an independent hearing officer.
The step is uncommon.
It represents the beginning of a multi-stage legal process, not a final termination. The teacher's name was not disclosed on the public agenda, consistent with Illinois personnel privacy practices.
Administrative assistant terminated
The board also voted on a separate action item recommending termination of an administrative assistant. No further details about the employee or the reason for termination appeared in the public meeting agenda.
Energy buying process approved
In a fiscal move affecting taxpayers, the board approved a natural gas and energy supply buying process. The agenda did not include dollar amounts or vendor names. The item also appears on the Sept. 8 agenda preview, suggesting additional action is expected at the next regular meeting.
Budget preview and what's next
The board received a presentation on the district's tentative FY27 budget. Formal budget action is anticipated at the Sept. 22 meeting.
The Aug. 11 session was the first regular board meeting for superintendent Terri Bresnahan, who started July 1 under a four-year contract after 11 years leading Berkeley School District 87.
The district's next regular board meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8, with action items including an intergovernmental agreement with the Village of Oak Park and a follow-up on the energy supply buying process. The first day of school for D97 students is Aug. 26.
