Oak Park Avenue gets one last car-free hurrah before it reopens to traffic in late November.
The Hemingway District is hosting "On the Road Again," a block party stretching from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, along Oak Park Avenue between Lake Street and Pleasant Street, according to the Village of Oak Park's weekly report. Residents are invited to bring bikes, scooters, rollerblades and skateboards to cruise the freshly paved road before it officially opens to vehicles.
The celebration caps months of construction under the Renew the Avenue project, which closed Oak Park Avenue through the downtown area for a full rebuild. The Hemingway District's event page describes the party as "a chance to reconnect with the neighborhood, support the businesses that kept going through construction, and celebrate what's ahead."
Planned activities include live music throughout the day, a classic car lineup along the avenue in the morning, food and drinks from local restaurants, shopping at Hemingway District boutiques and family-friendly kids' activities. The Hemingway District said additional details are still to come.
The construction project has tested the district's businesses all summer. The Village launched a "Bike to the Biz" campaign in July encouraging residents to pedal to Hemingway District shops, with monthly drawings for $250 in "Biker Bucks" awarded to participants who spent at least $40 across four retailers. Tamar Zamora of Oak Park, a Grove Avenue resident and regular Hemingway District shopper who frequents Dandelion Bookshop, won the September drawing. The Renew the Avenue website noted the Bike to the Biz program runs through Oct. 31, with one final winner to be announced Nov. 1.
Meanwhile, construction crews are still finishing the job. The Village's weekly report for the week ending Oct. 23 said electrical crews were completing conduit installation for new street lighting and traffic signals, brick pavers were being laid in the Pleasant Street intersection, and the North Boulevard intersection was set for concrete and brick work beginning Nov. 2.
The road is expected to reopen in late November. For updates on the Nov. 14 block party lineup, visit the Hemingway District's event page.
