The family of Ann Marie LoPrieno, a 71-year-old Oak Park resident struck and killed by a cement truck on Sept. 23, is considering legal action.

LoPrieno was walking to Courageous Bakery on the morning of Sept. 23 when a concrete truck hit her at the intersection of North Boulevard and Euclid Avenue, right outside the Oak Park Fire Department, according to NBC Chicago. She was transported to Loyola University Medical Center and pronounced dead at 9:17 a.m., according to a Village of Oak Park statement.

The truck was operated by a concrete supplier working on the ongoing streetscape project along Oak Park Avenue, the village said. The driver remained at the scene and received a citation for failure to yield to a pedestrian. He was due in court, NBC Chicago reported.

Attorney Louis Anthony Cairo of GWC Law, representing the family, said he had reviewed video footage of the crash. He said the collision should never have happened and described video showing LoPrieno, who walked with a cane, trying to run before the truck struck her.

"So, our objective is to hold everybody accountable," Cairo said, according to NBC Chicago.

The family was described as considering legal action.

The village said in a statement to NBC Chicago that no specific changes had been made at the intersection. It said pedestrian safety remains a priority and pointed to its commitment to zero traffic deaths or serious injuries by 2035.

The village adopted a Vision Zero Action Plan in February 2025 after more than a year of data analysis and community engagement. The plan includes 10 strategies. One of them: "Respond to fatal crashes with urgency."

LoPrieno lived on the 400 block of South Oak Park Avenue, the village said. She was pursuing a Ph.D. at Trident University International, which plans to award the degree posthumously, NBC Chicago reported.

Haylee Johnson, a manager at Courageous Bakery, told NBC Chicago that LoPrieno was a daily customer known by name to every barista. Johnson also pointed to the impact of ongoing construction in the area, saying trucks had been coming through regularly since the previous December.

The Oak Park Police Department is investigating the crash.
