Oak Park police valued the sports cards stolen from Trade Oak Park at $86,000, nearly triple the $30,000 estimate owner Matthew Greenwell gave after the break-in.
The higher figure appears in the Oak Park Police Department's Oct. 12–15 activity report, which logged the burglary at 163 S. Oak Park Ave. under complaint 26-05694. The report states that unknown persons used a crowbar on the front door, broke two glass security cases and removed approximately 150 sports cards. The police report lists the figure as "estimated loss / damage," a category that may include both the value of the cards and physical damage to the store.
As we reported Oct. 15, Greenwell told Oak Park.com the stolen cards were worth about $30,000. The police report does not explain how the department arrived at its higher estimate. No arrests have been announced.
The burglary occurred between 6 p.m. Oct. 11 and 4:57 a.m. Oct. 13, according to the report. Greenwell told Oak Park.com the crowbar was left inside and that officers obtained fingerprints at the scene.
"There's hope that these people will be caught," Greenwell told Oak Park.com. "Whether or not we get any inventory back, it's probably a very long shot …"
The same report also logged a garage burglary on the 900 block of N. Humphrey. Someone broke the door to a resident's garage overnight Wednesday, Oct. 14, between 12:30 a.m. and 6 a.m., and took a collection of Milwaukee-brand power tools. The haul included drills, an impact drill, a circular saw, a jigsaw, a router, a sander, batteries and a nail gun. The estimated loss totals $27,000.
A black 2021 Nissan Maxima was stolen from the 1300 block of N. Austin overnight Oct. 13–14. Police estimated that loss at $40,000.
