At least six infrastructure projects are tearing up streets, alleys and sidewalks across Oak Park simultaneously, according to the Village Manager's weekly report published Thursday, Aug. 13.

Here's where crews are working and what comes next.

Renew the Avenue

The marquee project replacing century-old water and sewer lines beneath Oak Park Avenue is entering a new phase. Excavation of the old subgrade on the south block was expected to wrap up the week ending Aug. 14, with backfilling scheduled for the week of Aug. 17. Sidewalk and concrete installation is set to begin the week of Aug. 24. To the north, excavation for a new concrete roadway base between North Boulevard and Lake Street is scheduled to start the week of Aug. 17.

New lighting, electrical and traffic signal conduits on the south block are wrapping up, with the electrical contractor moving to South Boulevard. AT&T is installing a precast communications manhole on North Boulevard, and Union Pacific is finishing concrete parapet improvements on the North Boulevard bridge overpass.

Hemingway District businesses remain open during construction. The Village is providing monthly window washing for storefronts and has extended free parking at the Avenue Parking Garage, 720 North Blvd., to 90 minutes. A Bike to the Biz campaign offers monthly $250 drawings through November for shoppers who spend at least $10 at four different district retailers.

Water and sewer replacement

Crews are replacing lead water service lines at 64 homes. Sewer service installations on Scoville Avenue were completed Monday, Aug. 10, and water service connections are expected to start the week of Aug. 17. The village estimates connections will take two to three weeks. A new 8-inch water main on Euclid Avenue was completed the week ending Aug. 14 and is being pressure tested before service connections begin.

Street resurfacing

Concrete curb and sidewalk were poured on Erie Street (Elmwood Avenue to Taylor Avenue) and Van Buren Street (East Avenue to Ridgeland Avenue) the week ending Aug. 14. The contractor is moving next to Marion Street (Division Street to Augusta Street) and Augusta Street (Harlem Avenue to Oak Park Avenue). Asphalt milling is expected to start the week of Aug. 17 on Erie Street, with Van Buren next. The removal crew is also working on Euclid Avenue, Grove Avenue and Lombard Avenue, with Iowa Street and Scoville Avenue segments coming after.

Alley improvements

The alley between the 800 blocks of North Harvey Avenue and Mapleton Avenue reopened to traffic the week of Aug. 11. All asphalt patching is done. Remaining work: minor landscaping and installing plaques identifying green alleys funded by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.

Sidewalk replacement and sewer lining

The annual sidewalk replacement project began saw cutting the week ending Aug. 14, with removals starting on the east side of streets in the village's southeast quadrant. Separately, a sewer lining contractor finished televising all project locations and expects to begin lining within two weeks.

New rectangular rapid flashing beacons and bike buttons installed across the village were expected to be fully operational by the end of the week ending Aug. 14.

What's next: Bridging the Ike meeting

Residents can weigh in on the future of I-290 bridge crossings at a Bridging the Ike public meeting Thursday, Aug. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Veterans Room at the Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake St. The federally funded study is examining expanded bridge decks that could include plazas, park space and potential commercial development above the expressway. The session will present design alternatives incorporating feedback from an April 7 kickoff meeting and subsequent stakeholder sessions. Residents can also submit input at www.engageoakpark.com/ike.
