A Chicago juvenile found with a firearm near South Oak Park Avenue and a trespass arrest at the public library topped a 48-hour stretch that also included a smash-and-grab burglary, two stolen cars and two attempted vehicle thefts, according to the Oak Park Police Department's latest activity summary.
The report covers Monday, Aug. 3 (second watch) through Tuesday, Aug. 4 (first watch) and includes several incidents dating to the prior weekend.
Weapon arrest
Officers arrested a juvenile Chicago resident at 2:39 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 on the 1000 block of S. Oak Park Ave. for unlawful possession of a weapon after finding the teen with a firearm. The department did not release the juvenile's name. A court date is pending.
Library trespass
Rashad R. Young, 18, of the 800 block of N. Oak Park Ave., was arrested at 6:56 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3 for criminal trespass to real property at the Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake St. A court date is pending.
All charged individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty.
Carnival Foods burglary
A burglar smashed two glass entry doors at Carnival Foods, 824 S. Oak Park Ave., at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 and took three bottles of Tito's Vodka. Estimated loss: $132.39.
Vehicle thefts and attempts
The report logged two completed motor vehicle thefts and two attempts:
- A silver 2002 Honda CR-V was stolen from the 100 block of S. Taylor between Saturday, Aug. 1 and Monday, Aug. 3. Estimated loss: $3,000.
- A black 2015 Nissan Altima belonging to a Berwyn resident was stolen from the 1000 block of Pleasant on Monday, Aug. 3 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Estimated loss: $3,700.
- A 2024 Kia Seltos belonging to an Oak Park resident on the 100 block of S. Humphrey had its window broken and ignition damaged between Friday, July 31 and Saturday, Aug. 1 in a failed theft attempt.
- Three or four suspects broke the front passenger-side window of a blue 2013 Hyundai Elantra on the 300 block of Lake at 6:59 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3 and attempted to steal it. They were last seen heading east in the North Lake Street alley. Estimated damage: $3,000.
Recovered stolen vehicles
Two previously stolen vehicles were recovered during the period:
- A 2021 Jeep Cherokee, reported stolen July 27 from the 6600 block of Roosevelt, was found by Chicago police at 4:47 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3 on the 1300 block of S. Troy in Chicago.
- A 2009 Honda Odyssey, reported stolen July 14 from the 900 block of S. Oak Park Ave., was recovered by Illinois State Police at 1:41 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4 on the 800 block of S. 15th St. in Maywood.
No arrests were made in either recovery.
Other incidents
- A 2017 Nissan Maxima on the 100 block of N. Kenilworth had its passenger-side window smashed and glove compartment ransacked between Sunday, Aug. 2 and Monday, Aug. 3.
- Someone threw two bricks through the front and rear windshields of a 2005 Honda Civic on the 0–100 block of Chicago Ave. between Saturday, Aug. 1 and Sunday, Aug. 2. Estimated damage: $600.
- A white tandem Giordano Vaggio bicycle was stolen from a bike rack on the 300 block of South Blvd. between Sunday, Aug. 2 and Monday, Aug. 3. Estimated loss: $140.
- Front and rear license plates were stolen from a 2002 Honda CR-V on the 400 block of N. Austin between Sunday, Aug. 2 and Monday, Aug. 3. Estimated loss: $302.
The report logged 12 total complaint entries across the period. OPD hosted its National Night Out event Tuesday, Aug. 4 from 5–8 p.m. on the south lawn at Village Hall, 123 Madison St.
