The Oak Park Arts District is running several free and low-cost community events along Harrison Street through July, from French conversation practice to board game nights to meditation classes.
The district's French-language Conversation Café, organized by L'Institut français d'Oak Park, anchors the lineup. Stacy Fifer, who founded and runs the Institut from 11 Harrison St., hosts both an online and an in-person version. The online café meets the second Wednesday of each month, 7–8 p.m. via Zoom. The next in-person session lands Wednesday, July 16, from 2–3 p.m. at Léa French Café, 106 N. Marion St. Both cost $10 to drop in; a five-visit punch card runs $50.
The Arts District's event listing describes the café as a casual, French-only conversation group open to all skill levels, with no pressure and a relaxed atmosphere. Participants register at frenchinstitute.net/registerccs to receive the Zoom link for online sessions.
Board Game Night is scheduled for the last Friday of each month, 7–9 p.m. Per the district's recurring calendar, that falls on Friday, July 25 this month. The event is free, open to anyone 14 and older, and attendees can bring their own games. The district provides some on-site.
Kadampa Meditation Center, at 13 Harrison St., hosts three weekly sessions: Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. (July's topic: "Consciousness: The Final Frontier"), Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m. ("Finding True Happiness"), and Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. for adults and kids ages 4–11. Costs were not listed on the Arts District calendar.
Bead in Hand, which has operated on Harrison Street since the 1990s, runs afternoon jewelry-making workshops including Basic Earring Design, Kumihimo Japanese Braiding, and Beginning Bead Weaving. Sessions run from 2–4 p.m.; pricing is available through the shop directly.
The 80-business corridor stretching from Austin Boulevard to Elmwood Avenue has hosted arts programming since landscape architect Mark Finger founded the Harrison Street Business Alliance in 1993, according to the Oak Park–River Forest Historical Society. Laura Maychruk, owner of Maychruk Real Estate and board president of the Arts District for more than 20 years, oversees the organization's current programming.
The full events calendar is at oakparkartsdistrict.com/events. Separately, L'Institut français is accepting summer 2026 registration for its formal French courses, capped at 10 students, at frenchinstitute.net.
