A thief cut the catalytic converter from a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander on the 0–100 block of Adams Street in Oak Park. The theft occurred between the evening of Monday, Oct. 5, and the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 6, causing an estimated $2,000 loss to the vehicle's owner, an Oak Park resident.
The incident was one of nine in the Oak Park Police Department's summary report covering Oct. 6 through Oct. 8. The report documented a cluster of vehicle-targeting crimes alongside a residential burglary, two retail thefts and a DUI arrest.
A separate September report logged a similar catalytic converter theft attempt on a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander on the 600 block of S. Humphrey on Sept. 2, with $1,200 in estimated damage. In a May 7 post on X, the Oak Park Police Department warned residents that precious metals inside catalytic converters make them a target, noting thieves can remove one in minutes.
The Oct. 6–8 period also saw an attempted vehicle theft on the 900 block of S. Euclid early Wednesday, Oct. 7. Someone damaged the rear driver's side window and front passenger dashboard of a 2019 Dodge Charger, causing an estimated $150 in damage.
On the same day, the Chicago Police Department recovered a 2022 Kia Sportage at the 4300 block of W. Maypole in Chicago. The vehicle had been reported stolen Sept. 25 from the 200 block of N. Grove in Oak Park. No arrests were made.
Also on Oct. 6, someone removed the rear license plate from a 2017 Honda CR-V on the 500 block of N. Cuyler Avenue. The loss estimate was not listed.
Kenneth Ashford, 41, of Chicago, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol after an accident on the 0–100 block of Madison Street at 12:29 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7. Ashford is considered innocent until proven guilty.
Brittney D. Rogers, 37, of Chicago, was arrested on a charge of retail theft at Jewel-Osco, 438 Madison St., at 4:53 p.m. Oct. 7. Rogers is considered innocent until proven guilty.
A separate retail theft occurred at Dollar Tree, 922 Madison St., on the evening of Oct. 6. A suspect took five Irish Spring soaps, Ajax laundry soap and ten ice cream bars, then left the store without paying. The estimated loss was $28.80. The suspect was last seen heading north on Clinton Street on a blue Divvy bike.
The report also documented a residential burglary on the 1100 block of Ontario between the night of Oct. 6 and the afternoon of Oct. 7. Someone entered the home by unknown means and took a pair of dress pants containing a wallet, U.S. currency, three credit cards and a driver's license.
Someone stole the tires from a bicycle on the 1100 block of Augusta Street on Oct. 6, causing an estimated $200 loss.
