The Village of Oak Park presented three concepts for replacing the Home Avenue Pedestrian Bridge at a public open house Wednesday, July 8, at the Oak Park Conservatory, 615 Garfield St.
The drop-in session ran from 6 to 8 p.m. with no formal presentation. Residents could view project displays, review the three replacement concepts, and speak with project team members at their own pace, according to the Village's announcement.
The bridge
The Home Avenue Pedestrian Bridge carries foot and bicycle traffic over Interstate 290, the CTA Blue Line, and CSX railroad tracks. It is one of a limited number of crossings connecting neighborhoods on either side of that corridor.
The Village says the existing structure needs replacement. According to the Engage Oak Park project page, the bridge does not meet current ADA accessibility requirements, and the project's stated goals include improving pedestrian and bicycle accessibility, improving safety and user comfort, boosting visibility and connectivity, and creating a gateway feature for the community.
How concepts were evaluated
The project team evaluated the three replacement concepts against six criteria, according to the Engage Oak Park site: accessibility, user comfort, constructability, long-term maintenance, cost, and community character and aesthetics. The Village has not published detailed descriptions or renderings of the individual alternatives.
How to participate
Residents who could not attend the July 8 open house can still view meeting materials and submit comments online at engageoakpark.com/homeavebridge. The site includes a "brainstormer" tool for submitting ideas directly to the project team.
The Village has not announced a next milestone date for the project, such as a design selection vote or Village Board presentation. Community feedback from the open house and online submissions will help inform future refinement of the bridge design, according to the project page.
No post-event summary, attendance count, or recap of community feedback from the July 8 session has been published by the Village as of Wednesday evening.
