Three Oak Park residents reported catalytic converters stolen from their vehicles between Aug. 8 and Aug. 13, all from Kia or Hyundai models parked on residential streets, according to the Oak Park Police Department's activity summary covering Aug. 11–14.
The thefts targeted a 2013 Kia sedan in the 100 block of S. Humphrey ($700 loss), a 2014 Kia Optima in the 400 block of S. Harvey (loss unknown) and a 2014 Hyundai Elantra in the 100 block of Washington ($2,500 loss).
OPD posted a public advisory on its X account Wednesday, Aug. 12, during the same week the thefts were reported. The department said converter thefts can happen in minutes and directed residents to prevention tips on its website, citing Sgt. Samantha Deuchler.
No suspects have been identified.
Attempted vehicle theft, break-ins on N. Humphrey
The same reporting period logged an attempted motor vehicle theft in the 1200 block of N. Humphrey. Someone broke the rear passenger window of a 2020 Kia Forte and peeled the steering column between Monday, Aug. 10, and Tuesday, Aug. 11. Damage was estimated at $1,500.
A 2023 Nissan Sentra parked on the same block had its driver's side window smashed during the same overnight window, with $500 in damage.
Arrests
Luis Montanez, 26, of the 400 block of S. Harvey, was arrested for domestic battery Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 8:04 a.m., according to the OPD report.
Seyvon Woodring, 25, of the 2700 block of Roosevelt in Chicago, was arrested for retail theft Thursday, Aug. 13, at 8:21 a.m. The incident is linked to the Jewel Food Store at 7036 Roosevelt.
David Mabry, 22, of the 2900 block of W. Lake in Chicago, was arrested Thursday, Aug. 13, for criminal damage to property stemming from a July 15 incident on the 100 block of Chicago. As we reported Aug. 6, Mabry was previously arrested on a battery charge related to the same date and location.
All defendants have pending court dates. All are considered innocent until proven guilty.
Retail thefts
Three individuals entered the Walgreens at 6412 Roosevelt Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 9:20 a.m. and took 11 packages of razors valued at $198.49 before fleeing in a white Jeep with two broken rear windows, last seen heading north on Ridgeland.
Less than two hours later, a man removed four pairs of pants and a hooded sweatshirt from the Old Navy at 417 N. Harlem without paying. Loss: $284.08.
